History Uncovered Episode 30: Franz Reichelt, The Man Who Jumped Off The Eiffel Tower

In 1912, a man named Franz Reichelt embarked on a daring mission to prove the success of his homemade parachute suit by jumping off the Eiffel Tower. This is the story of a daring inventor with a bold vision and the tragic end to his dreams.

The Ambitious Invention

Franz Reichelt grew up amidst the early days of aviation, fascinated by news stories of audacious flying machines and their brave pilots. However, he couldn’t ignore the sobering reality that many of these pilots lost their lives in the pursuit of flight. Inspired to make a difference, Reichelt, a tailor by trade, set out to design a parachute suit that could save aviators during short falls.

Despite his unwavering enthusiasm, Reichelt’s early prototypes proved ineffective. Dummies thrown out of his Parisian apartment simply plummeted to the ground, and even a personal test ended with a broken leg when the suit failed to slow his fall. Nonetheless, Reichelt remained determined, believing that the success of his invention hinged on finding the right height to jump from.

The Eiffel Tower Leap

Convinced that leaping from the Eiffel Tower would not only provide the necessary conditions for success but also bring him fame, Reichelt confidently ascended to the tower’s platform on February 4, 1912. News cameras rolled, and concerned onlookers gathered below, anxiously awaiting his demonstration.

As friends pleaded with him to reconsider, Reichelt hesitated on the platform. Doubt and fear may have finally caught up with him. However, fuelled by his lifelong conviction, he leaped from the tower — but tragically fell to his death.

A Tragic End

Instantly, cries of horror resonated from both the onlookers below and Reichelt’s friends on the platform. Police rushed to his side, but it was too late. At the tender age of 33, Franz Reichelt paid the ultimate price for his ambition, leaving behind a legacy of audacity and tragic failure.

Franz Reichelt’s story serves as a reminder of the risks and sacrifices made in the pursuit of innovation. Although his parachute suit never saved a life, his boldness and unrelenting passion make him a memorable figure in history.
